Everyday Miracles (part 2 Away) including the cycle

This wonderful programme on the bbc iplayer (it has been broadcast recently) has several pieces on bicycle design and history and is essentially on new materials and their consequence on design of objects around us. I thoroughly recommend it. The first section on bikes at the beginning is followed later by a bit on carbon fibre frames!

Club Ride. Wednesday 27th August.

The Club Ride on Wednesday leaves from the church gates in Kirkby Stephen at 9.00am.
The early start allows for a leisurely ascent to Lamps Moss and on to the head of Swaledale. We ride down the dale stopping for coffee and cakes at the bakery cafe in Reeth. The ride continues into the Vale of Richmond and over to Wensleydale for lunch at Jervaulx Abbey. The return is along the north side of Wensleydale, possibly stopping for tea at Hardrow.
Apart from the first climb out of the Eden Valley the route is undulating and provides some pleasurable riding along two of the best valleys in the Dales. The total distance is about 78 miles.

Teas at Cotehill

Just a reminder that teas are being served 10 am  - 4 pm at Cotehill Village Hall over the August Bank Holiday if anyone fancies a ride out this way. There is also an exhibition: Life in World War 1.

Ride on Sunday 24th

It says on the runs list - 'Long and quite hilly' As planned it is 130km and 2500m
So to encourage you to come if you are having second thoughts:
  • Dick and Liz  have offered soup and cake and tea for lunch at Nenthead
  • The weather is looking good if still a little cool with little wind.
  • The days are still long - sunset 8.30pm!
  • Although its Bank Holiday Weekend there won't be much traffic!
But seriously, modifications to the route may be made.

A worthwhile petition

This is another case of the law not taking the killing of cyclists on the road seriously and  I hope you can sign this petition if you agree.

Message from Amy Parks of Critical Mass Birmingham

Hi, my brother in law, Kris Jarvis, was killed by a drunk and dangerous driver on the 13th February this year, along with one of his best friends, John Morland. We are wondering if any of you lovely members would be able to help us get justice for Kris and John who were killed while cycling.
The man who killed Kris, a father of 5, and partner of 22 years to Tracey Fidler, and John, father of 2, partner of 13 years to Hayley Lindsay, was 2.5x the drink limit, high on cocaine, driving at 70mph in a 30mph zone, disqualified, uninsured, and driving his partner's car without consent, at the time he hit John and Kris. He has 67 convictions previous to this. He is currently appealing his 10 year 3 month sentence, which has already been instantly cut to half, with his release date now being may 2019. If his appeal goes through, that could become 4, and on good behaviour, 2 years.
Tracey and Hayley have set up a petition to get harsher sentences for Dangerous drivers. The aim is to get the law changed so dangerous drivers who kill, will get upto the 14 year maximum sentence PER PERSON killed, so when a multiple fatality, each victim is treated as individuals, and the 2 sentences will run CONSECUTIVELY, NOT concurrently, as they do now!!! We need 100,000 signatures to get to the Houses of Parliament and stand a hope of getting the law changed, to make the road safer for everyone.
Please take the time to sign and share our petition to everyone you know. Kris and John would be really grateful. And I know Tracey, Hayley and the rest of their families are too. Thank you very much in advance

Please also join our page for updates if you wish to follow the progress of our campaign

Please pass this on to maximise the petition.

Thank you

Watch out the Hedgecutters are about !

Chris Pattrickson suffered a punctured tube last Wednesday from a massive thorn after passing a hedge cutter trimming a hedge inside a field boundary near Plumpton.
The flat tyre was only apparent a mile or two further down the road.
I rode the same lanes earlier on and was concerned about thorns scattered on the road as I passed the hedge cutter working in the field .
I was lucky and didn't pick up any thorns.
Is the the first sighting of the dreaded hedge cutter in Cumbria?.
It's a bit like reporting the first Cuckoo to be heard in the country.

Volunteers Wanted

Hello
I am the inclusive cycling champion for the CTC in the NW and am working with Watchtree Wheelers http://www.watchtreewheelers.co.uk/ to get more people with additional needs cycling. We are trying to incease the use of the adaptive cycles and diversify the participants. Ryan supports anyone with any needs to enjoy cycling.
We are looking for people to be involved in a community group for this great centre and are having a meeting (with tea, coffee and cake!) on the 13th up at Watchtree.
If any of you are interested and want to know more come along between 3 and 6 and meet us. Could you also put this offer out to others and see if anyone wants to come along?
looking forward to meeting some of you and hope you can make it.

Sunday, August 10

This is a moderately paced ride starting in Appleby. The route is via Asby, Little Asby, Newbiggin-on- Lune, Fat Lamb and Fell End to Farfield Mill, (mile 23) for late 11s, or BYO if you want to eat earlier.
Then we go up Garsdale to Moorcock Inn and down into Kirkby-Stephen, (mile 43). From there it is a straight run not quite into Appleby (mile 54). The finish is up over the Golf Course and down from Hilton to Appleby, (mile 62) for refreshments at my place.

For those who feel the need for a greater challenge, there is ample scope for additional loops - or indeed to end at mile 54, when you can have my key and put the kettle on.

The weather forecast for Sunday is 'uncertain'.

Opening of the new track at Watchtree tomorrow (Wednesday)

If anyone is planning NOT to go cycling tomorrow, you can go to the official opening of the new cycle track at Watchtree Nature Reserve near Gt Orton, Carlisle.   The opening will be by Karen Dargue - Paralympian gold medalist at the London paralympics.    Details of the opening at www.watchtreewheelers.co.uk

Up Hill and Down Dales - Club Ride Wednesday 6 August

Please note that the ride will start at 0900 tomorrow from The Cloisters in Kirkby Stephen. It is a hilly route and the plan is to head to Hawes via Mallerstang and then over Fleet Moss to Buckden for 11's. From there we will drop into Kettlewell and go over Park Rash to West Witton and have lunch at Aysgarth Falls. We will then head for Hardraw where those who wish can return via Buttertubs and Lamps Moss and those who don't can come back via Mallerstang.
The weather forecast could be better, but if conditions are particularly unfriendly we have options to shorten the route as deemed necessary.
Hope to see you tomorrow,
Keith G
